While a lot of companies out there are deciding to go with online-only manuals (usually in PDF form), it is worth the extra effort and cost to go to the trouble of giving your customers a hard copy. Yes, you should have a copy online as well, but there are many advantages for both you and your customer to printing and publishing a paper version. First, your customer can have the manual in hand while they are assembling the item, or investigating any problems they may be having - not always possible with a PDF (unless your customer has a laptop, or is willing to print out the manual). Second, you can be assured that all your customers have the manual in hand, meaning, long story short, fewer calls to your support team. And the more you can do to prevent support or service phone calls, the better.

2. Make It Fun To Read. While there are plenty of customers who will only consult the manual when absolutely necessary, there are lots of others who will actually curl up with it, and read it from cover to cover. This is the audience you should be playing for. You don’t have to fill your manual full of jokes or anything, but you do need to make sure that it is written in a conversational style, that is it well organized into chapters and sections and if need be, an index so your readers can find specific items quickly and easily.

3. Show AND Tell. People learn in three different ways - seeing, hearing, and touching. Paper shredders are a necessary part of every office these days because they’re a great way to protect everyone’s privacy and identity. However, before you rush out and buy one, you need to think about what kind of shredder you need. Here are five things you should think about when buying one.

1) What will you be shredding? And how often? These are the first two questions you need to ask yourself. Obviously, you’re probably going to be shredding paper, but what about CD’s? Credit cards? Floppy disks? Do you want to leave the paper clips and staples in your documents? If you need to destroy more than paper, be sure to look for a machine that can handle other types of media, as well as paper fasteners. Also, you’ll need to think about how often you’ll be shredding. 4) What special features do you want? After you’ve covered the important stuff, you can then focus on what special features you’d like to have. Some possibilities include anti-jam technology, near-silent operation, and so on.

It is amazing how an ordinary, everyday object can have a fascinating history. For example, take the paper shredder. Chances are you’ve used one at work and maybe you even have one of your very own at home. But did you know that this type of office product dates back to the turn of the 20th century? And that it has ties to Nazism and also played a role in the Watergate scandal? Let us travel back in time and take a look at the interesting origins of the paper shredder.

The turn of the 20th century. The shredder was originally the brain-child of a man named Abbot Augustus Low, an inventor located in Horseshoe, New York. In 1909, he received a patent for something called a “waste paper receptacle,” a device that would aid the user in disposing of his/her unneeded documents. However, the plans for this device never came to fruition and it would be a few more decades before such a device was actually made.

The 1930’s to the 50’s. In the mid-1930’s, a man who opposed the philosophies and practices of the Nazis drew up a plan for a paper shredder based on the idea behind the hand-cranked pasta maker. His name was Adolf Ehinger and his plan for the device was born out of a fervent desire to destroy his anti-Nazi documents and avoid scrutiny by the authorities. The first product based on his plans was made in 1955 and he later created his own company, EBA Mashinenfabrik, which is now known as EBA Krug & Priester GmbH & Co. Over time, the company’s machines became electric as opposed to manual, and were marketed to banks, government agencies, and other organizations seeking document security.

The 1970’s and 80’s. Watergate was a defining moment for the United States when the scandal erupted in 1972 and paper shredders had a hand in the debacle. Supposedly, G. Gordon Liddy used a device known as the Shredmaster 400 to destroy a bunch of evidence having to do with the break-in at the Democratic National Party headquarters. Later on in the decade, shredders were used at the U.S. embassy in Iran to destroy important documents. Unfortunately, the people at the embassy were using strip-cut devices and when the building was seized in 1979, it was possible for the documents to be pieced back together, resulting in a massive security breach and underlining the need for more secure cross-cut machines. (The government now has very strict rules about which machines can be used and rightfully so.) Also, Col. Oliver North eventually told Congress that he used an Intimus 007 S cross-cut machine when he needed to dispose of private data. This admission caused sales of the product to increase by 20% in the mid-1980’s.

Since then…. Paper shredders have become more and more popular over the past few decades thanks to legislation that mandates the destruction of private documents, such as the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Also, identity theft has become a much more common crime. Both of these occurrences have lead to non-government organizations and businesses shredding their documents, as well as individuals. Not complying with federal laws can lead to prosecution and massive fines, so there’s an imperative for businesses to shred their documents. As for individuals, according to the Federal Trade Commission, about 9 million people become identity theft victims every year - but destroying personal documents can help prevent that from happening. So it’s no wonder that these machines are so popular - and important.

In the big scheme of things, there are two groups that you market to as a business owner or entrepreneur. Group number one is your existing customers; you try to get more business from them. This is a terrific source of “low hanging fruit” by the way, and I and every other experienced marketer out there will tell you that if you had to choose between marketing to people who have already bought from you, or marketing to new people that might buy from you in the future, choose the former. Group number two that you can market to is new customers or prospects. You are trying to get them to become paying customers. Squeeze pages are an effective tool for getting people in that second group to opt-in to your mailing list so you can begin communicating with them and turning them into happy, paying customers.

A squeeze page is really just any page with a place for people to enter their email address. The reason they are called “squeeze” pages rather than the more boring and generic “opt-in” pages is that the whole purpose of a squeeze page is to get someone to put their email address in that little box and press the “submit” button. So, in effect, you as the marketer are psychologically “squeezing” or influencing the prospect to take that action. Motivation for parting with their email address is provided by offering to exchange something of value for that email address. For example, a free video tutorial, ebook, newsletter subscription, or the like.

Squeeze pages are a fundamental tool that online marketers use to add new prospects to their lists. Once you have an effective squeeze page that converts at a good rate, all you have to do is drive relevant traffic to the page, and you will grow your list. I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s a piece of cake to drive relevant traffic, but it actually can be done with no cash investment or very minimal cash investment of approximately one hundred dollars if you decide to outsource some of the work. Quick side tip about driving traffic: The article you are reading right now is a part of one of my own free strategies to attract interested entrepreneurs and small business owners to me!

Okay, let’s return now to the primary topic of this article. Squeeze pages can and should be used by businesses of all sizes and in all industries. Literally, from IBM to the hair salon, from attorneys to flower shops, squeeze pages should absolutely be part of every company’s online presence. If you look through the yellow pages and pick ten random businesses, you will find that those businesses that are even savvy enough to have websites are rarely collecting email addresses on their site. And if they are, they are not offering a very compelling reason for anyone to give their email address. That is such a huge missed opportunity! It’s like throwing your fishing line in the water with no bait. From a marketing perspective, that is pure insanity, especially because squeeze pages are so inexpensive and easy to create.

In addition, you can create specific squeeze pages targeted at various segments of your market. For example, if your market is “parenting help”, you could develop targeted squeeze pages about “Parenting Tips for Moms”, “Parenting Tips for Dads”, “Parenting Tips If Both Parents Are Working”, and “Parenting Tips for Single Moms and Dads”. This way, your squeeze pages can deliver specific incentives to capture email addresses based on the needs and desires of these particular demographic groups. This strategy of segmenting your market and communicating in a more personalized way with the sub-sets of your overall market is an advanced yet very easy strategy that can have a huge positive impact on your conversion rate (i.e. the percentage of visitors to your squeeze pages that actually opt in to your list.) Obviously, if you can improve your conversion rate, you’ll improve the number of prospects on your list.

Setting up a squeeze page is really just like setting up any other type of web page. You can have a squeeze page set up as a page within your larger website, or it can have its own domain name. Once you have created the web page, you will want an enticing title. Continuing with the “parenting help” example above, it could be something like “Are you sick and tired of coming home from work and having to deal with misbehaving, disrespectful kids?” This clarifies and reinforces the problem that you are then going to propose to solve by giving your visitors a bonus in exchange for their email address. Then, you can have either text or a video below the title (typically on the left side of the page) that further clarifies the problem and mentions benefits of opting in to your page. Then, typically to the right of the text you will want to have a box where prospects can enter their name and email address. This box should be clearly labeled with something like “Enter your name and email below to claim your copy of my invaluable free report right now…” Don’t worry about the perfect layout of your squeeze page, just get it set up, and then you can tweak and continuously improve it after you get some visitors.

Now, you’re probably wondering “where am I going to find this “opt in box” you mentioned?” The answer is, it couldn’t be easier… Your email marketing system (such as iContact, which I recommend for everyone except very advanced marketers) will automatically generate the code for these boxes. You don’ t have to know anything about code or programming, just how to copy and paste a line of code (technical gibberish) from one page to another. From your email marketing system, follow the instructions they provide to create a “sign up form” and then copy and paste the code they give you into the area of your squeeze page where you want the opt in box to go. (The opt in box is the little box where people enter their name and email address.)

If that last paragraph flow over your head, do not worry, you can find someone on eLance or Craigslist that can set this up for you for fifty to one hundred dollars (even less if you use someone overseas). My advice is that you do not try to learn any of this technical stuff yourself. Get in the habit of outsourcing it, and you focus on improving your marketing. One great benefit of this system is that the opt in box on your squeeze page will be automatically linked to your list in your email marketing system. So, when someone enters their name and email address, you don’t have to worry about adding it to your list, it will already be done automatically!

If you have followed these steps, then you have created a squeeze page with the ability to capture the email addresses of your prospects and have them automatically added to your list in your email marketing system. Keep in mind that you can always tweak and test your squeeze pages to see what is the most effective layout, offer, and text to get as many people as possible to opt-in to your list.

It is amazing when you look around Norwich, just what a diverse place it really is. When you first look at the city, it is easy to think that perhaps it is not as multi-cultural or as political as other big cities. But is this really true? Is Norwich really a bit of a back water, a bit slower, and a bit less cultured than the rest of the country? I would certainly hope not and I certainly do not think it is true. Take a look at our theatres, our restaurants, our market….. have a look down gentlemans walk – there is plenty going on and there are lots of different people taking part.

I have recently been attending a leadership course which encourages people from different backgrounds to use their leadership skills to influence positive change and bring about improvements in a community. It is amazing how so many people can see the same thing in such entirely different ways. What one person may see as a problem or challenge another person will see as benefit or something that much not be altered because of its purpose. It is easy to look at ones own view, how marketing Norwich can only help our community for example in my case, but overlook the concerns and impact that others can see.

Through talking to other people with different backgrounds I can see this challenges – but I can also see perfectly good reasons why these should not stop us and can be overcome by us working together.

Norwich needs to get better at talking to each other, and sharing ideas. We know this because of where the Forum has been built for example, and how many of our city centre buildings do not quite work together. We know this through policies aimed at helping small businesses which are dis-jointed and don’t work between different organisations within our city. Marketing Norwich properly will need a stronger emphasis on looking at what visitors may want from our city, and working with everybody to see how we can deliver it.

We need religious leaders, business leaders, political leaders, planners, architects, small businesses all to have a part in the plan to raise the city’s profile. But in the longer term they also need to have an agenda constantly aimed at marketing the area properly. People should know where what they do fits into the marketing Norwich plan, why what they do is important to the city’s reputation. They also need to know and understand how not only do they add value but also how they gain value from having extra revenue streams and the chance to pitch their products, services and ideas to a wider audience. An audience which although not based in our part of the world may continue to be a customer through the internet for example.

Over the next few months I hope to meet a lot more people based in Norwich who have an influencing or leadership role.
